From the boondocks to urban areas, farmers, fisherfolks, vendors, teachers, employees, writers, artists, weavers, students, small entrepreneurs, virtually people from all sectors, find that co-operatives can help them grow more as a people, together, with each one extending a helping hand to the other. Co-ops extend to its members services in many forms like savings and loans facilities, developmental and technical training, business development services, information technology services, mortuary services, agri-related services, and so forth.

Given the worldwide trends affecting co-ops even in the grassroots, and which were more and more revolutionizing the way that people conducted trade, business, governance, communication, and even their day-to-day interaction with one another, the International Co-operative Alliance (ICA), the worldwide body of co-ops with headquarters in Switzerland, sought to strengthen and make more relevant the principles of co-operation that guided co-ops worldwide. Since ICA’s creation in 1895, it has been the final authority for defining co-ops and for elaborating the principles upon which they should be based.

The world has seen many developments and changes, both positive and negative, in the recent past. These developments, foremost of which is globalization with its encompassing and far-reaching effects, have given rise to many issues that affect people from all walks of life in all countries. Co-ops are among the most affected by these issues—and their accompanying challenges and threats—being organizations of people of mostly meager resources who have come together to help one another in their needs. Recognizing these challenges and threats, the co-op movement has re-affirmed and become more cognizant of its dual role: recognizing both the economic and social needs of its members, the community, and the society as well.

The “Millennium Development Goals (MDGs)” are derived from the actions and targets in the “Millennium Declaration” that was adopted by 189 countries and signed by 147 heads of states and governments in the United Nations (UN) “Millennium Summit” in year 2000. The eight MDGs are time-bound and measurable targets to address by year 2015 extreme poverty in its many dimensions—income poverty, hunger, disease, lack of adequate shelter, and exclusion—while promoting gender equality, education, and environmental sustainability. They are also the basic human rights of each person on the planet to health, education, shelter, and security.

Co-ops are by nature business enterprises with a social agenda, spanning a global history of a little over a hundred years, and guided by a set of universal co-op values and principles. Most co-ops provide financial services as their main business activity, created mainly to render credit services to the members, and to liberate them from usurious rates of popular economic institutions. While some co-ops have other business activities, their general objectives are to respond to the needs of the members and the community through the provision of various forms of services and programs. Co-ops are thus committed to protect and promote the interests of their members and also small businesses. Co-ops have to be loyal to their mission and will have to maintain accessibility of basic financial services (savings, credit, payment services) to all levels of their membership. But to be truly efficient in responding to the different needs of their women members and of their men members, co-ops have to set up services, as needed, to support the development of the members both economically and politically. Co-ops should provide a support system to the financial services rendered in order to help members become what they aspire to be.
