The AWCF has been fortunate to have established a partnership with the ASEAN Foundation (AF), with the support of the Japan ASEAN Solidarity Fund (JASF), for its activities geared to helping improve the plight of women, particularly through the conduct of entrepreneurial capacity-building for women leaders and/or entrepreneurs in co-ops or in organizations supporting co-ops and self-help groups.
The AF was established by 10 ASEAN leaders in 1997, 30 years after the ASEAN was established. The AF promotes greater awareness of ASEAN and greater interaction among the peoples of ASEAN, and it contributes to development co-operation that promotes economic development and poverty alleviation, these being direct issues that address poverty disparity and mutual cooperation.
Since 2001, AWCF has been working with AF on projects supporting and promoting women’s economic empowerment. In 2007, AWCF and AF implemented a capability-building project that promoted micro-enterprise development for co-ops, with focus on using ICT in enterprise development. This is in recognition of ICT’s role in making work easier and more efficient, providing faster access to information, enhancing employment opportunities, and expanding market base. It is the hope that women entrepreneurs in co-ops will also enjoy these benefits of ICT.
