Co-op GFPs continue to build skills PDF Print E-mail

In the latter part of 2011, AWCF brought together gender focal persons (GFPs) and alternate GFPs of 15 Philippine co-operatives through the event called “Co-op GFP Forum and Writing Seminar on Documentation and Reports.” The event was among the monitoring and capacity-building activities that the co-ops from the country’s Luzon, Visayas, and Mindanao island groups are undertaking as participants in the “Promoting Gender Equality Among Co-operatives in the Philippines” Project of AWCF. The Project is under the “Advancing Civic Capacities for Effective and Sustainable Services to the Poor (ACCESS to the Poor)” Programme (2010-2012) in the Philippines of the Swedish Cooperative Centre (SCC), with fund support from the Swedish International Development Cooperation Agency (SIDA).

AWCF-FK project has back-to-back activities PDF Print E-mail
This May 2011 was a busy period for participants of the “Capacity-building for Gender and Co-operatives in Asia” Project, implemented by AWCF and the Fredskorpset (FK) Norway among AWCF’s member-organizations in Cambodia, Indonesia, Malaysia, Thailand, Vietnam, and Philippines. The five-year Project began in 2008 where human resource is developed as personnel from AWCF’s member-organizations take part as exchange participants in batches, with the different organizations acting as their hosts or Project partners. Exchange participants stay with their host-organizations for 10 months.

As 2010-2011 is the third year of Project implementation, all stakeholders were immersed this May in preparing reports and presentations for their two major meetings: the “Third Phase Review Meeting” and “Fourth Phase Partners Planning Workshop.”

“Global300 Report 2010” announces world’s largest co-op enterprises PDF Print E-mail

The International Co-operative Alliance (ICA) launched on October 31, 2011 in New York City, USA, the “Global300 Report 2010,” which announced that the largest 300 co-operative enterprises in the world have a collective revenue of USD 1.6 trillion, comparable to the gross domestic product (GDP) of the world’s ninth largest economy.

The Report detailed that although co-operatives were affected by the global financial crisis in 2008, they provided stability and security due to their measured risk model and their emphasis on services to members–not just profits. As a result, the co-op model represents an important contribution to the economic and social well-being of populations and their communities. As ICA President Dame Pauline Green has said, “The diversity and robustness of the co-operative business model is based on principles and values. This is why co-operatives were resilient during the global financial crisis, employing over 100 million people worldwide and enabling the development and welfare of societies in the most competitive economies.”

Being uprooted from one’s own homeland to live in another country (in Asia in this instance) and interact with people of another culture for 10 months can be quite a challenge. Seven co-op personnel are doing just that and facing the challenge from 2010 to 2011 as they participate in phase 3 (or batch 3) of AWCF-Fredskorpset (FK) Norway’s “Capacity-building for Gender and Co-operatives in Asia” Project. The Project started in 2008, where co-op personnel are deployed to AWCF member-organizations in Asia in a staff exchange activity designed to boost human resource capacity in co-op and gender development.
